Mississauga, Ontario – More and more, parents realize that this age of social media, texting and screen time has had detrimental effects on their child’s communication skills. Children struggle with literature analysis, answering comprehension questions or writing persuasive essays. But parents in Mississauga and Oakville have found a solution, Quills and Quotes, a proven and challenging writing and public speaking program.
The program’s mission is to ensure students graduate with premier skills in communication. The primary focus of the writing program is essay writing, which involves critical analysis of research, generating strong, persuasive arguments, structuring supportive points and writing effectively. In addition, students must complete a weekly reading assignment designed to build vocabulary and reading comprehension. The parents are impressed with the topics their children tackle, including climate change, social justice, health and politics. One parent, A.K.’s father, commented, “the ride home is fun, my daughter always has these new ideas about things we can do to help out in the world.”
A unique aspect of the program is the public speaking component. “An essential part of effective communication is public speaking. We want our students to thrive in their chosen pathways, and we know the key to that success is confident public speaking skills,” says the program’s director Shauna Jain. Students learn techniques to take their presentations to a premier level, including body language, audience engagement, and speech structure. They participate in debates, impromptu challenges, slide presentations, networking workshops, and mock interviews. Quills and Quotes take students beyond the classroom, pushes them to reach their highest potential, and gives them the tools to be leading communicators. One of the best compliments I receive from parents is when they say, “I wish there was a program like this when I was younger,” says Dr. Jain, and I often reply, “me too.”
